● 広島はどんな街でしたか?日本に留学中にどんな体験をしましたか?
What kind of impression did you get from Hiroshima City? What experiences did you have during the mobile life?
My impression of Hiroshima was a very positive one. I spent countless hours roaming the streets of different neighborhoods, taking photographs, and exploring every little alleyway. I especially enjoyed the city’s size—it offered the benefits of a larger city (museums, galleries, cultural institutions, restaurants, shopping opportunities, etc.) while at the same time never feeling overwhelming or cramped. There was also easy access to nature for hikes and great options for day trips, such as Onomichi or the Seto Inland Sea. Even though the campus is a bit outside the city center, it provided a calm atmosphere and a relaxing environment for studying and being productive.
About three months into my exchange, once my Japanese had improved a little, I was able to start my first conversations with people in Hiroshima. From then on, I had many meaningful interactions and even made some friends outside of university. Hiroshima also has a small but very active art scene, and it was great to become a small part of it during my time there.
The people of Hiroshima are also incredibly enthusiastic about their sports teams. I had the chance to go to a Carp game, and the atmosphere in the stadium was amazing. Lastly, I was able to attend the 80th commemoration ceremony at Peace Memorial Park, which was a deeply moving experience. I would recommend every exchange student to take part in it if they have the opportunity.

● 広島市立大学ではどんな勉強をしましたか?
What did you study in Hiroshima City University? How did you like about the lectures at HCU?
I was an exchange student in the CA+T (Contemporary Arts + Theory) Program at HCU. Besides that, I also took Japanese language lessons at the Language Center and joined a few classes from the International Faculty, including Peace & Conflict Studies, History of Japanese Politics & Diplomacy, and Futures Studies.
In my major (CA+T), I really liked how the professors managed to strike a good balance between giving me valuable feedback and pointing me in the right direction, while still leaving me plenty of artistic freedom. They were always supportive of my ideas and helped me in every possible way. Thanks to that support, I was even able to hold my first solo exhibition at Gallery Unité in Hiroshima Motomachi.
The other students in the program were also incredibly supportive. They helped me out whenever they could, whether it was translating exhibition texts or giving me creative and cultural advice. One student, who specializes in curation, even made it possible for me to take part in a group exhibition during Hiroshima Art Galleries Week.
I also really appreciated that the CA+T professors regularly organized guest lectures with interesting artists and people from the art world, who shared their practice and professional experiences.
● 留学をした感想や、これから広島市立大学への留学を考えている学生にメッセージをお願いします。
Give your comments or advises for future exchange students.
Try to explore Hiroshima and its neighborhoods as much as possible, there are so many beautiful and interesting things to discover! Also, make the most of all the opportunities available to you, not only in terms of classes but also outside of them, such as visiting schools or local festivals. It’s also really helpful to have at least a basic understanding of Japanese, as it can open the door to many meaningful conversations and help you build connections. Finally, if you are an art student, take advantage of the broad opportunities to exhibit your work for example, during the campus festival or at galleries in the city. It’s a really valuable experience!
